“Why Pregnant Women Want Their Personal Style Back : The New Era of Maternity Fashion”

Pregnancy changes a woman’s body, but it does not change her personality, taste or love for fashion. For years, maternity clothing was associated with oversized silhouettes and basic designs focused mainly on comfort. Today, women want more. They want maternity wear that accommodates a growing bump while still allowing them to look stylish and feel like themselves.

The new era of maternity fashion is about adapting clothing to pregnancy without giving up personal style.

From Oversized Clothes to Fashion That Fits Her

The expectations around maternity wear are changing among Indian women. A Mylo survey of 5,400 expecting and new mothers found that 60% described maternity wear as too casual and not flattering. The finding highlights an important gap: women want comfort, but they also want clothing that makes them feel confident and fashionable.

Modern maternity fashion is responding with better silhouettes, contemporary designs and thoughtful fits. Instead of hiding the bump under excessive fabric, maternity clothing can work with the changing shape of the body while maintaining a polished appearance.

Why Personal Style Matters During Pregnancy

Personal style does not disappear during pregnancy. A woman may need different fits, but she does not suddenly stop liking her favourite colours, prints, dresses, kurtas or coordinated outfits.

A thoughtfully designed maternity dress, modern kurta or comfortable co-ord can accommodate the bump while still reflecting the woman wearing it. Pregnancy may change the fit of clothing, but it does not have to change a woman’s fashion identity.

The New Maternity Wear Formula: Fashion Meets Function

Modern maternity wear needs to balance appearance with everyday comfort. The strongest designs combine style, flexibility and practical details.

1. Flattering silhouettes: Designs complement the changing body instead of hiding it under excessive fabric.

2. Breathable fabrics: Soft materials make everyday dressing more comfortable.

3. Modern details: Contemporary colours, prints, necklines and cuts keep maternity wear fashionable.

4. Flexible fits: Adaptable construction allows room as the bump grows.

5. Nursing friendly features: Selected designs can remain useful beyond pregnancy.

6. Versatile styling: Maternity pieces can work for everyday wear, outings and casual occasions.

A Mylo survey of 1,637 expecting and postpartum mothers found that 96.3% considered fabric important when choosing maternity dresses, showing how closely comfort and clothing choices are connected.

Indian Maternity Fashion Is Becoming More Stylish

Indian maternity wear is moving beyond the traditional idea of loose clothing. Dresses, contemporary kurtas, relaxed tops and coordinated outfits are giving women more choices that match their personalities.

Another Mylo survey found that 72.6% of expecting and new mothers preferred maternity dresses over regular clothes during summer. This reflects growing interest in clothing that can offer both comfort and a fashionable appearance.

Brands such as Mumyu reflect this changing approach by creating maternity and nursing wear with contemporary designs that bring comfort and current fashion together. The focus is on making maternity clothing feel like a genuine part of a woman’s wardrobe rather than a temporary compromise.

The Future of Maternity Fashion Is Personal

The future of maternity fashion is not about one fixed style. Some women may prefer minimal designs, while others may choose vibrant prints, modern Indian silhouettes or contemporary outfits.

What matters is having the freedom to choose.

Maternity wear has entered a phase where comfort and style can exist together. Women can dress for their changing bodies without putting their personal style on pause.

Pregnancy may change the body, but it does not erase individuality. The new era of maternity fashion is about helping women feel comfortable, confident and completely themselves.
