A pregnant woman may attend her doctor's appointment with a husband, mother, mother in law or another family member. Their support can be reassuring, but she should also have an opportunity to speak privately with her doctor.

Sometimes, the most important questions are the ones she may hesitate to ask when someone else is listening.

What Might She Hesitate to Discuss

Pregnancy can bring concerns that feel too personal to discuss in front of family. A woman may want to talk about a sensitive symptom, sexual health, emotional wellbeing, relationship concerns, medication or a healthcare decision.

She may also want to discuss something happening at home or explain that she is uncomfortable with a particular decision. If another person remains present throughout the consultation, she may choose not to mention it.

Not speaking does not necessarily mean there is nothing to discuss. Sometimes, a woman simply needs privacy to feel comfortable speaking openly.

Why Does Private Communication Matter

A private conversation gives the doctor an opportunity to hear directly from the pregnant woman. It can help her:

1. Ask sensitive questions freely: without worrying about another person's reaction.

2. Explain symptoms and concerns honestly: that she may hesitate to mention in front of family.

3. Understand tests and treatments: by asking her healthcare provider direct questions.

4. Express her preferences before participating in healthcare decisions.

The World Health Organization identifies privacy, confidentiality, dignity and informed choice as important elements of respectful maternity care.

What Does Indian Research Show

The importance of privacy is also reflected in Indian research. A study involving 401 women across six health facilities in three Indian states found non consented and non confidential care among the common forms of disrespect and abuse reported by participants.

Another Indian study observed 41 deliveries in three public health facilities in Gujarat and assessed privacy, confidentiality, information, informed consent and choice as important aspects of respectful maternity care. These findings highlight why private communication should be a normal part of maternity care.

How Can Doctors Create Private Space

Simple steps can make private communication easier:

1. Offer a few private minutes routinely during appointments.

2. Explain that private conversations are normal rather than making them seem unusual.

3. Ask sensitive questions directly to the woman and give her time to respond.

4. Protect confidential information shared during the consultation.

Privacy Does Not Mean Excluding Family

Family members can continue to provide support during pregnancy while the doctor gives the woman time to speak alone.

Pregnancy privacy is not about keeping family away. It is about giving a woman the space to speak honestly, ask questions and have her own voice heard in her healthcare.
