"Himachal launches Aanchal App"
Himachal Pradesh is planning a pilot of the Aanchal app at 50 health institutions in Shimla and Chamba to identify high risk pregnancies earlier. Supported by Jhpiego, the initiative aims to track women from pregnancy confirmation through delivery, postnatal care and infant immunization, according to Amar Ujala’s report published on 21 October 2026. A wider rollout is planned if the pilot proves successful.

What Is a High Risk Pregnancy
A high risk pregnancy involves a greater chance of complications for the mother or baby. Early identification helps healthcare workers arrange closer monitoring, referrals and appropriate treatment.
How Will the Aanchal App Work
According to the report, connected devices are expected to record blood pressure, hemoglobin, blood sugar, temperature and the baby’s heartbeat. Potentially concerning readings may trigger alerts for frontline healthcare workers, including ASHAs, ANMs and CHOs.
The system is also expected to support digital referrals and electronic labour room records. These features could improve coordination, particularly in remote hill communities. However, alerts can make a difference only when followed by timely medical assessment and treatment.
What Does Himachal’s Earlier Research Show
Himachal Pradesh previously used digital pregnancy tracking through the SEWA programme in Chamba. A study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care in 2021 reported the following findings from an intervention conducted between October 2019 and October 2020:
1.1,340 high risk pregnancies were identified.
2. The identification rate increased from 3.5% to 27.9% during the intervention.
3. Of 405 women requiring referrals, 332 were referred for further care.
The study also highlighted implementation challenges involving data management, internet connectivity and referral coordination.
These findings concern SEWA, not Aanchal. They indicate the potential of digital tracking to improve identification, but do not prove that the new pilot will improve pregnancy outcomes.
Will Earlier Alerts Lead to Better Care
The real test will be whether alerts lead to timely assessments, completed referrals and appropriate treatment. Some women may require specialist consultations, transport or emergency care.
The pilot’s impact will need to be evaluated using implementation data, referral follow up and maternal and newborn health outcomes. Can digital tracking help Himachal Pradesh bridge the gap between identifying a pregnancy risk and receiving the right care in time
