“ Pre-Pregnancy Nutrition Matters Too”

For many women, nutrition becomes a priority only after a pregnancy test turns positive. But nutritional preparation does not have to wait until pregnancy begins. The period before conception can be an important opportunity to improve nutritional status, address deficiencies and build healthier eating habits before the body begins supporting a growing baby.

Why Nutrition Before Pregnancy Matters

A woman’s nutritional status before conception can influence how she enters pregnancy. The ICMR National Institute of Nutrition’s 2024 Dietary Guidelines for Indians recognise the importance of nutrition during the pre conception period and recommend achieving an optimal weight and addressing concerns such as anaemia before pregnancy.

This is particularly relevant in India. According to NFHS-5 (2019–21), 57% of women aged 15–49 were anaemic. Identifying and addressing anaemia before conception can therefore be an important part of pregnancy preparation rather than waiting until pregnancy begins.

Folic Acid Shows Why Timing Matters

Folic acid is one of the clearest examples of why some nutritional steps need to begin before conception. WHO recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from the time a woman starts trying to conceive until 12 weeks of pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects.

The timing is important because early fetal development begins soon after conception, sometimes before a woman knows she is pregnant. Preparing nutritional needs in advance can therefore matter from the very beginning.

What Should Pre Pregnancy Nutrition Focus On?

Pre pregnancy nutrition is not about following a strict diet or trying to eat perfectly. It is about creating consistent habits and addressing nutritional needs early.

1.Folate: Include folate rich foods and discuss recommended folic acid supplementation with a healthcare professional.

2. Iron: Include iron rich foods and get checked for anemia when advised.

3. Protein: Include adequate protein as part of balanced everyday meals.

4. Variety: Choose a mix of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and other nutrient rich foods.

5. Healthy weight: Work towards an appropriate weight before conception rather than using restrictive or crash diets.

Making Nutrition Part of Pregnancy Planning

As pre pregnancy nutrition becomes part of pregnancy planning, keeping track of daily routines can also be easier with digital support. MUMYU Tools includes a nutrition planner and reminders that can help women stay organized while preparing for and moving through pregnancy.

Pregnancy nutrition will always be essential, but it does not have to be where the conversation starts. Preparing nutritionally before conception can help women enter pregnancy better informed, better prepared and more aware of their nutritional needs from the very beginning.
