Summer Vacation Health Hacks- Traditional Remedies for Common Health Issues

Stomach disturbances during vacation are a common issue, especially in the summer heat. Changing time zones, long hours of sitting, and eating outside food can lead to bloating, gas, constipation, or loose motions. But don’t worry summer vacation health hacks rooted in traditional Indian remedies can offer effective relief. Ingredients like Hing (asafetida), jeera (cumin), ajwain (carom seeds), and pudina (mint) help soothe stomach discomfort. For example, a pinch of Hing mixed with warm oil gently massaged on your baby’s tummy can ease gas and pain.

You can also try giving jeera or ajwain water—simply boil the seeds in water, let it cool, and offer small sips. These herbs help neutralize acidity, aid digestion, and reduce bloating. For older children, warm lemon water with honey works well to relieve cramps.

2. Traditional Remedies and Prevention of Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is characterized by nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, and generally occurs during travel due to conflicting signals that the brain receives from the eyes and inner ear.

To avoid motion sickness, you can chew ginger or mint as it helps reduce nausea and calm the digestive system. If this doesn’t work, try ajwain seeds with or without jaggery it has antiemetic properties that help with nausea and dizziness. Tulsi leaves are also helpful for calming the stomach. Taking Eladi Churna which is made from a blend of Indian spices and herbs including cardamom , cinnamon, नागकेसर (Mesua ferrea), black pepper, long pepper , and ginger ,with honey and water before travel is another effective method to prevent nausea and vomiting as it used for digestive complaints such as excessive salivation, anorexia, vomiting, abdominal pain, and throat discomfort, especially those related to Kapha imbalance . Also try acidic fruits such as lemons and amla, which are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, to help strengthen immunity and reduce the chances of motion sickness. Just cut them into slices and taste them to avoid motion sickness.

3. Manage Dehydration, Especially During Travel

Hot weather causes the body to sweat more. As a result, electrolytes and water are lost from the body. If you are traveling on a humid summer day, it is important to stay hydrated. Drink coconut water, oral rehydration solutions, or electrolyte powders, as they help maintain a proper balance of minerals in the body. You can simply add pink salt to your water, adding a pinch of pink salt to water can help replenish lost electrolytes, especially after sweating. Additionally, you can drink lemon water (Nimbu Pani), buttermilk (Chaas), and barley water and please reduce the intake of caffeine and salty or preserved snacks.

4. Avoid Sunburn and Skin Rashes

The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are more intense during summer. High temperatures and humidity cause more sweating, which can irritate the skin and lead to rashes. To avoid sunburn and rashes, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen. You can apply cucumber slices or potato slices to sunburned skin, or use a paste of Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth) and sandalwood (Chandan) but remember to do a patch test always before leaving for vacation. Eating antioxidant-rich foods like tomatoes, berries, and leafy greens can help your skin defend itself from sun damage.

5. What to Do in Case of Food Poisoning

Yogurt combined with fenugreek seeds or clack salt is a popular remedy, as it helps fight harmful bacteria and soothes the digestive tract, while bananas provide gentle nutrition and help restore potassium lost through diarrhea or vomiting. You can also eat Rice porridge or rice water, for this boil rice in extra water, strain out the rice, and drink the starchy water with a pinch of salt. It will help in rehydration and restoration of electrolytes. Another home remedy for food poisoning is to mix plain yogurt with chopped basil leaves and a pinch of black pepper, then consume it three times a day to calm the stomach and fight infection.

Enjoy a healthy, happy, and memorable summer holiday!
